Instituted in 1996, the George M. Skurla Outstanding Alumni Award honors an FIT alumnus with a degree in aeronautics or aerospace engineering, and at least ten years of experience in the field. In addition, the annual recipient must possess "a demonstrated commitment and an exemplary record in advancing the aviation and aerospace industry." Names of the recipients are inscribed on the display case of a modern aviation sculpture located in the lobby of Skurla Hall, home of FIT’s College of Aeronautics.

George M. Skurla is past president and CEO of Grumman Aerospace, and his accomplishments are widely acclaimed in the aviation and aerospace industry. He served on the FIT board of trustees, was an avid supporter of the university and the school and played a major role in the construction of the College of Aeronautics building that bears his name.  Mr. Skurla passed away in 2002 and is sorely missed by the students, staff and alumni of the College of Aeronautics.
